The Hingham Public Schools (HPS) have been a proud participant in the METtropolitan COuncil for Educational Opportunity (METCO) program since 1968. For more than 50 years, METCO has changed the racial composition of the participating districts and has become a national model for school desegregation. This state funded, voluntary educational desegregation program works to eliminate racial imbalance through the education of children from Boston, MA and Springfield, MA to suburban public schools in the 33 communities where the program operates.
METCO is the nation’s largest voluntary desegregation program. Currently, there are over 3,100 students enrolled in the MA METCO program. In 2019, the 4-year high school graduation rate for METCO participants was 96%.
METCO continues to provide opportunities for urban and suburban students to experience diversity, learn to respect human differences, and celebrate the richness of a multicultural learning environment. Currently, there are 48 METCO students attending school in the HPS. There are METCO students in each of the six schools within HPS. To be eligible to participate in the METCO program, a student must reside in either the Greater Boston or Springfield metropolitan area. Placement numbers in a specific school district are based upon availability which is set by the host public school system.
